So You Think Yoga is Easy…

If you are doing P90X you know yoga is hard…really hard.  In fact, I believe most people skip yoga not because it is 90 minutes, but simply because it is incredibly difficult.  Pushing your body to its limits has benefits, and the benefits of yoga are too many to list here.  If you don’t believe me CLICK HERE to see our interview with Tony Horton on this subject.  If anyone knows a thing or two about a thing or two on this topic it is Tony.

Here is one sequence from Yoga X that is a killer.  Right angle pose.  Great for detox they tell me.  An excellent way to deliver pain to your quads as well.

Yoga X is like a warm blanket for your soul. I feel so much better after doing this workout. Today I was really beat up. I’ve been going hard lately, and we are starting Insanity on August 1st. I need some recovery, and yoga is exactly what the doctor ordered.

I tend to skip yoga because of the length and not the moves. I love yoga and I love the moves in P90x. I also notice a difference when I have not done it for awhile. However, one hour and 30 minutes is too long for me to do it at the gym and at night, my time usually gets pulled in another direction. I know its not a great excuse but its the best I have. I would love to find a yoga program with this intensity but at about 45 minutes total.

I hear you Tyson. I don’t always do all of Yoga X. I always do the vinyasa section and the balance postures. I don’t always do Yoga Belly 7′s and may skip some of the “pretzel” manuvers. You can trim about 10 mins off the front end if you are well warmed up and just get into the sun salutations. You can still get a great workout in about 1:10 and get in most of the really good stuff.

For a shorter workout, the Fountain of Youth DVD from Tony’s One on One series is great. It is about 50 mins and hits all the high points. Tony is coming out with another yoga One on One that will also be about 45 mins, but will focus on holding postures for a longer period of time. Looking forward to that one.

I just started P90X today and haven’t gone through the yoga yet, but I am so psyched so see what Tony does. I spent 6 months last year taking yoga from a direct student of “Light on Yoga” author B.K.S. Iyengar.

Just a comment on the length of time – In order to properly go through preparation, poses and shivasana you need at least 90 minutes. Anything less than that, and you are either not preparing yourself enough or else you are not providing your body with enough restorative time. Either way, you are opening yourself up to some pretty bad injuries.

For anyone serious about yoga I HIGHLY recommend locating a good yoga center (not “gym yoga” classes) that spends time teaching you technique and proper form – especially as yoga can cause injuries especially to poorly designed parts of our anatomy such as the knees and shoulders. You especially want to find classes taught by a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT). You can locate an RYT at: http://www.yogaalliance.org/teacher_search.cfm

If you don’t have time to sign up for a regular class, you may want to schedule a one-on-one session with an RYT to review your yoga poses to ensure that you have the right form. You will find that most are very accommodating for sessions like this. In my own experience, I have noticed that simple re-positioning of hips, knees, hands, ankles, torso twisting, etc. can mean a tremendous difference and allow you to get so much more out of your yoga practice.

RocItJim – I think you’ll like Yoga X. I agree wholeheartedly with your comments about yoga, finding a proper place to practice, and the time required. Tony takes yoga very seriously as well. He’s a big believer that yoga is really the Fountain of Youth. If you have not seen our interview with him, you can find it here.

The Yoga Retreat we did with him in February was one of the greatest ski weekends I’ve ever been on.

Take care, and please provide more comments as you move through the program. We are always interested to hear people’s thoughts.
