Back to Running

I went for my first training run in about 4 months this morning, and it was great. And by “great” I mean that I woke up, put on my shoes and went for a 3.2 mile run. It wasn’t fast and it wasn’t pretty, but it is a deposit in the bank towards my next goal, which is the Phoenix 1/2 Marathon on January 17th. Now if the race were this weekend, I’d be freaking out, but it isn’t. I have a plan and I trust that the process will get me where I need to go. For now, that’s just lacing up the kicks and getting some miles in.

I mentioned this idea of “Process Dictating Results” yesterday and it occurred to me that not everyone knows where I got that from. Here’s a part of a larger post on our site. One of my favorites, and one that I reread whenever I find myself in a training rut. The post is about Level Six Performers, or Elite Athletes.

5. Process over Results

This is probably my favorite principle. Level six performers focus on execution. They spend less time thinking about winning and more time focusing on what it takes to win. They are focused on the process, not the result. They understand that the process will lead to the desired result. By focusing on the process, they stay “in the moment” and are not distracted by their emotions.

This is not to say that you should not visualize. Personally, I’m a big believer in visualization, which I picked up from golf. What it means is that you need to focus on what you are doing when you are doing it.

Lower level athletes tend to focus on a desired result, rather than focusing on the process that will lead them to a result. You simply cannot wish your way to a higher level of fitness. It takes work and it takes time.

Focus on the process and the results will come. When you achieve your results that’s the time to enjoy them.

Have a great day everyone. Shakeology time for me!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this post and I found your link to the whole post, thank you! It is exactly what I have been thinking about in every area of my life -family, work, fitness, sports training. I have been so committed to the outcome with good results yet not my pontentional and this month I decided to start focusing on the process and committing to the process with faith that what I want will arrive even greater than I imagined. Anyway, long story short – LOVED your post and your team. I’m a BB member that follows your blog, keep it up! I’m on Day 16 of Power 90 – woo hoo!!

    Best,
    Jana

Thanks for the kind words. I think this is one of the hardest concepts for people to grasp. Whether you are talking about fitness, education, work, or just about any other skill the key is to pay your dues on a daily basis. Once you have a plan you have to trust that the plan will work if you work the plan. Power90 is where all of this started for us. In 2003, when we did P90 for the first time I’m not sure I fully understood this concept. In January of 2007, after I had gained back the weight and my life was a bit of a shambles, I went right back to P90 because I knew that if I committed to that process, it would deliver results. It did, and my life was changed forever. Cheers to you Jana for taking control of your life.

Aww thanks Dave, your my confirmation that I am on the right path. I too found BB back in 2006 and lost 40+ pounds with Power 90 and other programs and then found myself here again, a mess and 35 pounds overweight. I kept asking what is the missing link? I’ve done this before, what am I missing? My answer was to commit to the process and work the plan. You said it so well and I’m in the process of doing just that. Thanks for your motivation and encouragement!!
