My friend, fellow triathlete and virtual training partner Ryan Chapman put together a plan to increase strength and speed using a combination of runs and P90X workouts. Ryan formulated this plan after noticing a big decrease in his 5k time after doing a round of P90X. This has been a pretty common experience for people using P90X that go out and test themselves with a running event.
I’ve been using P90X as the foundation of all my strength training for several years, and have integrated it into my triathlon training. I’ve found that it is such a well rounded and easily adaptable program that it works very well for this purpose.
Here is the link to download the Excel spreadsheet that Ryan put together. Note that the only recovery week is a race taper week right before the race. You may want to mix in a week of lighter training, but given that this is only an 8 week plan, I’m not sure that is completely necessary.
If you decide to use this plan, let me know and give me your feedback. I’ll pass it on to Ryan. We are always interested in comments on training plans and to hear your personal experience. As Monica and I pursue our own individual training efforts, we want to continue to let you know what other people are doing to assist you. So, if you have a unique (or not so unique) training plan, let us know what it is so we can share it with other people.
Keep bringing it.
