What are the most important nutrients? Is there one nutrient that can put you over the edge and make you perform at a higher level? Is it a macronutrient [i.e., protein, fat or carbohydrate] or a micronutrient [i.e., vitamin, mineral, etc.]? This question was posed to me by Dr. Wheeler, Beachbody’s Chief Science Officer, in August when he spoke to a group of us in Phoenix, Arizona. Numerous answers were provided, but none seemed to satisfy Dr. Wheeler.
The answer is: the most important nutrients are the ones that are missing from your diet. It is almost impossible to tell what nutrient will make a dramatic difference for you, since we’re all different, each with a different nutritional deficiency. Many of these deficiencies are related to our environment. How much sleep do you get? How much physical stress do you place on your body? How much mental stress? Do you eat a healthy diet full of whole nutritious foods or do you choose processed foods? Do you drink soda [if so, watch this and stop, please)? All of these things factor into determining your ideal nutrient mixture.
Now that we know that we don’t know what the most important nutrients are, how do we make sure we cover all the bases and get a wide variety of nutrients? You have a couple of options. You could start by making sure you have a healthy ratio of macronutrients [i.e., protein, fat and carbohydrate]. Then, you could go to the store and buy a whole host of vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, prebiotics, and herbs. You’d then want to make sure you had an adequate amount of fiber in your diet. Next, you would want to make sure you chose whole foods [i.e., unprocessed stuff like fruit and veggies] that are rich in antioxidants. And, you had better eat a lot of them, because fruits and veggies are simply not as nutritious as they were 25 years ago when pesticide use was limited and soils were more fertile [for more info, READ THIS]. Finally, you’d want to make sure that all the things you’re taking go well with each other. It isn’t just enough to take in all this stuff. Sometimes, nutrients will compete for receptors in the body and can actually cancel each other out. You could do all of that…or, you could just take Shakeology every day, which is what I do.
I’ve been taking Shakeology for about 16 months now and I’ve never felt better. About a month after I started taking it, I was able to lose a rather stubborn eight pounds that I hadn’t been able to get rid of. As a cyclist and triathlete, weight management is extremely important to me. In addition, I noticed that I stopped getting sick. I get the flu about three times a year and it used to put me on death’s doorstep. I’d be in bed for a week. That just does not happen to me any more. My recovery times from hard workouts are shorter and my digestion is improved. I also feel like Shakeology has helped my body become more efficient at absorbing nutrients in the foods I eat. I’m simply healthier.
The retail price of Shakeology breaks down to about $4.00 per day. Most people spend that on coffee drinks that are loaded with sugar and fat. In contrast, Shakeology has been certified Low Glycemic. You can cut that cost by 10% by becoming a member of the Beachbody Club and you can cut that cost by 25% by becoming a Beachbody Coach, so there are options if you think $4.00 per day is too much to spend on your health. If you’d like to sample Shakeology before you buy it, we’d be happy to send you a sample…just fill out the form below and let us know what flavor you’d like.
Just remember, you don’t really need to know what the most important nutrient is, as long as you get it in your diet every day!
