What is the most important nutrient? What’s the one nutrient that can put you over the edge and can make you perform at a higher level? What’s the one thing that will make the difference? This question was posed to me by Dr. Wheeler, Beachbody’s Chief Science Officer, in August when he spoke to a group of us in Phoenix, AZ. Is it a macronutrient (protein, fat or carbs) or a micronutrient (vitamins, minerals, etc.)? Numerous answers were provided, but none seemed to get Dr. Wheeler’s attention.
The answer is that the most important nutrient is the one that is missing from your diet. It is almost impossible to tell what nutritent will make a dramatic difference for you, since we are all different. Every one of us has a different nutritional deficiency. Many of these deficiencies are related to our environment. How much sleep do you get? How much physical stress do you place on your body? How much mental stress? Do you eat a healthy diet full of whole nutritious foods, or do you choose processed foods? Do you drink soda (watch this and stop, please)? All these things factor into determining your ideal nutrient mixture.
So, now that we know what the most important nutrient is (and that we don’t know what it is), how do we make sure we cover all the bases and get a wide variety of nutrients? You have a couple of options. You could start by making sure you have a healthy ratio of macronutrients (protein, carbs & fat). Then ,you could go to the store and buy a whole host of vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, prebiotics, and herbs. You’d then want to make sure you had an adequate amount of fiber in your diet. Next, you would want to make sure you chose whole foods (i.e. unprocessed stuff like fruit and veggies) that are rich in anti-oxidents. And you had better eat a lot of them, because fruits and veggies are simply not as nutritious as they were 25 years ago when pesticide use was limited and soils were more fertile (READ THIS). Finally, you’d want to make sure that all the things you are taking go well with each other. It isn’t just enough to take in all this stuff. Sometimes, nutrients will compete for receptors in the body and can actually cancel each other out. You could do all of that, or you could just take Shakeology everyday, which is what I do.
I’ve been taking Shakeology for about 16 months now. I’ve never felt better. About a month after I started taking it, I was able to lose a rather stubborn 8 pounds that I just could not get rid of. As a cyclist and triathlete, weight management is extremely important to me. In addition, I noticed that I stopped getting sick. I get the flu about three times a year, and it used to put me on death’s door. I’d be in bed for a week. That just does not happen to me any more. My recovery times from hard workouts are shorter and my digestion is improved. I also feel like Shakeology has helped my body become more efficient at absorbing nutrients in the foods I eat. I’m simply healthier.
The retail price on Shakeology is $119.98, which breaks down to about $4.00 per day. Most people spend that on coffee drinks that are loaded with sugar. In contrast, Shakeology has been certified Low Glycemic. You can cut that cost by 10% by becomming a member of the Beachbody Club and you can cut that cost by 25% by becomming a Beachbody Coach, so there are options if you think $4.00 per day is too much to spend on your health. If you’d like to sample Shakeology before you purchase, we’d be happy to send you a sample of either Greenberry or Chocolate. Just CLICK HERE to contact us and let us know you are interested.
Just remember, you don’t really need to know what the most important nutrient is, as long as you get it in your diet every day!
