View Full Version : Mixing my WorkOuts with some Running

I have been working out to the BeachBody workouts for years now and have made major improvements to my health and well being...

My personal challenge was having Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), but what I loved about the BeachBody workouts was that I could modify and mix it up when I could not do what the program said to do... and over a period of time I was able to do more and accomplish things I had never dreamed off...

When I started the workouts back in the fall of 2005 I was in pretty bad shape not just physically but in every way possible. I had been diagnosed with RA at the age of 36... every day things like getting up and go to work was painful experience... as a single mother of two it made every part of my life difficult... every joint in my body hurt, I had no energy and nothing seemed to help.

But today I have managed to stay pain free and medication free since May of 2007... I have so far completed 2 1/2 marathons and looking forward to do more this year... first one coming up is the Rock N Roll 1/2 on March 14th in Dallas, Texas.

To be able to run pain free and for 13.1 miles blows me away... and I love it... I love what Beachbody has done for me and for my family.

If you are in Texas and love to run... you should consider joining me if not in Dallas then in San Antonio in November :)

Currently I'm doing the Insanity program and will soon be mixing in the runs... right now I'm recovering from a hip problem and will be take it slow in adding to many miles on it till I know if it can handle it...

Not sure what happened but my guess is that when I went canoeing with my sons back in the spring this year... my youngest son and I lost control of the canoe and hit a tree... well, it was my hip that took the hit the most and we got knocked into the water...

When training for my last 1/2 marathon in November of last year my hip continued to give me problems after I had been running for a few miles... but would go away after a few days of not running... I was trying to let it get as much rest as possible but of course when training for a marathon... that is not really going to happen...

I have now gotten my hip check out... nothing is fractured... and they think due to my RA I might just have had a harder time healing than normal... so I have gone through a round of shots and medication and will now start adding miles slowly... like I did when I first started running a few years ago... I'm going to run a little every week and gradually add the miles and then get into the full blown marathon training as soon as I can run the longer miles...

I'm not worried about my time for the marathon... for me it's a matter of doing my best and do it without killing my body... but of course I would also like to do well.. so as Tony says... I'll do my best and forget the rest :D

Hey Doris, I never asked you how your time was this year at the race?

My run time this year was almost an hour slower than last year... which I expected worse just because of my hip... but I had other issues that morning that I'm not going to talk about here ;) that slowed me down considerably lol

It was still fun though... my cousin came down and cheered us on and Jan and Mike was there from Baltimore... and Gail was there from California... we had a good time in San Antonio...

My next race will be with out injuries though... and will be much better :D

OK...

I'm thinking of doing something crazy this year... my first thing is running multiple 1/2 marathons...

The Dallas on in March... The San Antonio one in November.... My boys wants to go to Nashville in late April... that would be my third possibility... and would give me the Rock N Roll Triple Crown :)

So one of the groups I'm with... wants to do the Mud Run, I have thought about it and it sounds fun, but didn't really look at it in detail till yesterday... this one would require some good training... a little Insanity and what not...

This would be April 11th http://mudrundfw.com/

And in the future a possibility would be this one http://www.warriordash.com/

I must be crazy at 42 to even consider this... :p

So a little back ground on me...

When your have run your health into the ground there is hope...

I got divorced in 2002, it had been a tough last couple of year in the marriage and even tougher to be on my own dealing with a pissed off ex and I really didn't deal with the whole thing that well... which resulted to in 2003 at the age of 36 and a single parent of two boys at the time they were 6 and 8 years old... that my health took a major dumpster dive... I had completely run my health into the ground...

In a years time I had lost about 50 lbs... but in a very unhealthy way... and I messed up my immune system by not eating right and not sleeping right... working out was not something I ever did back then... I don't think I had ever made it past the first couple of weeks successfully, my knees usually would give me trouble so I gave up pretty fast.

I come from a tall skinny family and at 5'10" and about 200 lbs I was the short fat one in my family... by losing 50 lbs I was now down to a healthy weight for my height... but it sure didn't feel that way...

Every single joint in my body was hurting and I constantly felt like I had the flu... it started 4th of July weekend 2003 when the boys and I were vacationing in Galveston... I felt like I was having the flu and my right arm was useless, made it hard driving that far...

And over the next many months I went though test after test... with different doctors and specialists... and after many months, after everything else was ruled out, I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis... an autoimmune decease.

At first it was a devastating blow... single mom looking at the possibility of being crippled by this decease I had... no fun at all...

And in the beginning I followed the doctors and what they recommended, signed up for a gym member ship... did the normal thing anyone would do in that situation (or I think so) but after a year and a half and I was still in pain, could barely walk at one point... every day tasks were painful and difficult... sleeping was painful... what do you do... they kept trying different medication making it stronger and more toxic... and I didn't like that either...

And I'm not sure where the break though came... other than it was the culmination of many little things... after countless of hours of researching online... doing a bunch of small little things to help make it better... not knowing if this one would work or the next one... but in my desperate attempt I did a lot of very tiny things... if you want more details I'll be happy to give it... but not going to put it all here right now...

My main thing though was finding Beachbody (fall of 2005)... you know the late night infomercial... after giving up on the gym, I needed something I could fit into my busy day as a single mom and working full time and this fit that bill perfectly...

Started with Slim in 6... and moved on to Power 90... got the P90 Master Series... and went to Tony Horton Fitness Camp... and just loved how he was able to push me further than I had ever gone before... I think I was afraid if I would push it to hard my already hurting body would break... but it didn't...

Got daring and went on to P90X and loved it...

After a year of using the BB products and changing my life style... I gradually started tapering down my medications and eventually in May of 2007 I took my final prescribed pill for Rheumatoid Arthritis... and today January 2010 I'm still pain free and manage my health with working out and eating healthy... and a few other natural solutions... :D

The past two year I have ventured even further doing both ChaLean Extreme and Insanity and have now completed two 1/2 half marathons, and this year I'm going for two possibly three in one year :) and looking to be adding some more crazy things to it...

At the age of 42 I feel better than ever and can only say it's going to get better from here, age is just a number... :p

OK enough of my story for now... till next time... don't forget to push play.

My current challenge in life is getting my workouts in... my work is taking up much of my time, have been working till late into the night... also trying to fit in time for my kids... and other things...

My number one priority though is getting my sleep pattern back on track and get my workouts in in the morning or I can almost guarentee that my day runs wild and there is no time for me...

So it's finding a balance between every thing that is called life is important for me... have to make it my number one priority.

I really admire you for winning this struggle more than you lose it. I'm fighting the same struggle (aren't we all?) but without any children, and I think it's pretty hard. I can make up for it by bumping something to make time to work out in the afternoon, but I know that won't last forever, and I'll have to master getting up at 5:30 AM. It's that or let my health spoil. Won't make it easier, but like you say, either you do it or you don't. Failing one day is being human, but failing 6/7 days a week is not making it the top priority (like I currently do ><)

TexasFitClub

So it's a matter of finding a way to make it happen, know what don't work and find what does work.

I know my afternoons are shot when I got the kids, it's almost certain that it will not happen, my biggest success is when I get up and get it done in the morning, but with that said it really requires that I go to bed at a decent time too... I can't stay up all night and expect to do a good job on my workout in the morning.

And you are right, if you have a hard time do to it now when you have no kids then it's going to be hard for you once you start building a family. Assuming that it's something you want to do down the road.

You really need to find a way to make yourself a priority now cause when you start building a family we women have a tendency to put ourselves last and focus on everyone else. Well one thing we tend to forget, if we don't take care of ourselves then who will and if something happens to us who will then take care of our loved once? Despite what many women feel... it is not selfish to take care of our own health.

I had such a great time last night, we were maybe 20 ladies getting together and talking about health not just for the body but for the mind as well... there was three of us who presented different aspects of this and I hope to see some of those ladies in there...

Claudia was talking about pH levels and eating to alkaline... I tested myself this morning with the PH strips and I need to talk to Claudia about it, when I did the saliva test I'm at 7.4 and acid and when I did the urine test I'm at 6.2 alkaline... so I'm not sure what that means....

I of course talked about the fitness part of all of this, getting moving and staying motivated...

Shelia... talked about changing your mind to get the life you want... and I have to say this past week I have learned so much from her, how changing my thoughts or the way I talk to myself... it can make a world of difference...

She had me install an 'EASY BUTTON' :)

Hey Doris! Thanks for directing me here! Where did you get the ph strips? I can't find them here and I wanted to check myself too.
Your running..I admire it so much! Come spring I want to try the couch to 5K that you gave me..I just will have to go someplace to run it...cause I just can't go out my door..the road is to busy and I don't feel comfortable..but maybe I'll just have to get a red vest with blinking lights or something cause if I have to "go" someplace it will slow me down..can't impulse it if you know what I mean..
You stay focused on what you have to..everything will fall into place!
Love ya!

Hey guys. I spotted the pH discussion and wanted to direct you to this post/video.

http://www.thefitclubnetwork.com/2009/11/how-diet-soda-makes-you-fat/

It explains the metabolic process involved with blood pH and how certain foods impact your blood's pH. I talked to Missy Costello (Tony's chef) this weekend and she confirmed that putting lemon in your water will really help your body regulate your pH, without having to leach valuable minerals like calcium. Enjoy the video and bag the soda.

Thanks Dave...

Yes one of the things you can do to balance out your pH is to start your day with a cup of water with a squeezed lemon (and I add some stevia) which make for a great lemonade... the stevia after taste I find to go away when I use it with the citrus fruit...

I'm going to go check out the link though... thanks.

(((((JUDY)))))

I'm so glad you made it over here... have missed you and I am so missing my morning workouts, it's been crazy and I'm not getting in bed at a decent hour... so I have not gotten a workout in for a week now... it's not good.

Saturday night I didn't get home till past midnight... same with Sunday night... so last night I was hoping to get the boys in bed early but that didn't work... and once I finally get them down it takes me a while... and last night I was still working so it was 2 am before my head hit the pillow... not good for morning workouts... :(

So my main focus this week, well besides work... is to get my sleep pattern back on track, they have been out of whack for a long time now and it really has to stop. I really liked it when we meet up every morning... I know you are there... now I just have to get my butt there too...

As for the pH strips you can get them at whole foods stores and I got mine online I'll have to see if I can remember where.

As for my running... I'm so not getting out there right now... it's too darn cold... but I need to as I got a race to get ready for, I have gotten on the treadmill and have fun 2-3 miles and my hip seems to be holding with out problems... so I'm glad, it has been no fun to run with the pains...

OK... I'm going to see if I can call you sometime this week... I'm still waiting to hear news on my moms surgery... I was hoping I would have heard something by now since it's about 6 pm their time now... but I'll be patient... I'm just praying that this is it and she does not need another one... once this is over she will be able to get up and walk again :D

Love ya...

I do too... yesterday I went to Stables and I almost bought the rial one... but I only need the one that has already been installed :D

Here is how it works...

When you think of a job or task that you need to get done... and you are dreading or thinking it's impossible or way hard...

You put yourself out in the future past when the work is done... and you push the button... and it says ... 'Now that was easy' ... so now you have already seen the thing get done and you know it was easy... now go do it ;)

A trick of the mind... focusing on the positive of it rather than how hard it's going to be.

My friend can explain it a lot better than me...

Doris,

I have decided to do a 5K this year. It's one of my goals for the year. I'm thinking March. I don't want to run when it is too cold. My oldest son is going to run with me and I can't wait.

Do I need to do anything in particular to start training other than running?

JUDY... Thanks for the call today... it always helps me :) yes I'm doing my best to take care of me... I know that...

And I miss you too in the mornings and want to get back to that again... it was good to get up and get my workout in this morning... and was surprised to see you when I got done, I thought I had missed you since you were not there when I started. :D so I got my Judy fix this morning and want it again tomorrow ;)

Dana...

If you have not been running you have to start out slow or you are going to end up with shin splints and that hurts like heck... how I started was alternating walking and running... and start with 30 min 3 days a week and then slowly up the running and lessen the walking and eventually get to the full 30 min of running... and add to it...

I originally used a pod cast called Couch to 5K a nine week program, this really helped me get started without problems...

Let me know where you are currently are at in your running and I'll give you a suggestion of where to go from there...

Well DogBoy...

I have to admit my running is not up to par right now, I have been dealing with to many things and really need to get going as the race is less than a month and a half away... it's my plan to do a 6 mile run this weekend, I have been running mostly short runs #1 due to a hip injury that I'm trying not to aggravate by hitting it to fast and hard and #2 due to my long work hours...

So I'm not a running geek, I love to run but do not know the terminology... so I do not understand what you mean by splits... so help me understand what you mean and I'll let you know if I can.

So are you ready for your race? what have you been doing to get ready? Is this your first?

My last race was pretty much a disaster... not only had my hip been hurting a long time and every time I ran more than a couple of miles it started hurting... and then I decided on race day to use some of the gu blocks and my stomach didn't like it at all and gave in on my half way into the race... needless to say by mile 9 I was ready to give up... but I didn't I finished though I had a pretty bad time compared to my first race... but I did what I came to do and that was to finish the race...

I had my hip checked out and they can't find anything wrong with it, it still bothers me some, but not even close to being anything that is going to hinder me, I think I do need to be more diligent in stretching after my runs... and build more core muscles... So Insanity here we come :)

So one major thing I learned... never consume things on race day that my body has not tried before...

Hey Doris!
I just can't get in the habit of getting here everyday..maybe I need to start a thread here and eventually forget about my BB one..no real visitors there anyway...
Today was a nutty day for me..I'm fighting a bad sore throat and my right ear is clogged..so instead of burn intervals and extreme abs which is what I should have done...I did 20 min TJ this morning...than mid morning got together with Jenn and did Yoga Booty Ballet Caberet Cardio..it was fun..and then slim n limber..i'm dragging tonight though..don't know what's going on with the ear, never had this before..I'll wait and see what Monday brings whether or not to go to the dr....you know I want to stay out of there...
Once the weather breaks here in NY I"m going to start the couch to 5K..I decided...I'm just going to where bright colors, run on the opposite side of the road and just go out my front door..if I wait til 8:30/8:45 or so I'll miss the rush hour and buses...that's my goal...
I want to be like you :)

LOL... now that's nice to hear... as I sit here and watch Dreya doing her thing with PINK and I wish I was like her... if you ever get a chance to watch The Gymnast you should... it just shows what a power house she is...

Hope you get rid of the sore throat soon... I'm working though my sluggishness here... and got out and ran 3.5 miles tonight... no hip pain so I'm really happy about it... and hope to really add the miles this week with out pain.

I'm done with the cleanse... not really feeling any different, I need to get back to my shakeology but my stomach has not been good this past couple of days... so I have been holding off a bit...

I'm beat... going to sit down and watch some tv and turn it in early... I hope...

Hey Doris -

I'm the other BUD to whom DogBoy referred as running in Dallas next month. Looking forward to a relatively flat course! I'm also running with him this coming weekend in Austin. We've been training for this thing forever, it seems! Anyway, I hope to connect with you around race day. Good luck! BTW - I live in Runaway Bay, on Lake Bridgeport. I travel through the metroplex twice a week on my way to work south of Austin.

They do... I was working till 3 am since the boys are not here, but I know it's not good (so not need to being out the bat ;) ) I only got so many hours in the day and I was playing a bit to much this weekend I guess, didn't work much. :( sounds pretty bad knowing I had a 3 day weekend from work...

I have been thinking... since my hip is a worry to me still, I do not want to continue to run if it has to involve that kind of pain, my first race it was my foot killing me and this last one my hip, I got my next race in a month and so far I have been able to run pain free... :D

And some little stupid voice in my head is saying - MORE YOGA - so I'm reluctantly thinking I need to get away from Insanity for now and do yoga in between my runs, I really want to get to the point where I can run and feel good all the way though the long runs... this weekend I did 7 miles and felt great, only pain was normal muscle pain in both legs... not the wrong kind of pain. But that little voice in my head is saying if I want to continue to run pain free adding yoga will help me a great deal.

So I'm wondering... I got the two One on One with Tony or I get the regular YBB or the YBB Master Series too... maybe I'll try out some of the YBB dvd's have not really done them yet, maybe this will be a good way to check them out too.

I have a dinner date tonight with Phil or Tuxan who is in town from AZ this week... and Friday I will be flying to AZ myself to attend the Game Plan event there... so I'm looking forward to a very short job work week... I just hope I will have more time to work on my website this week... :)

Talk to you soon... maybe we can get on the phone this week

Hi Doris!
Found this as I was updating a new post on my blog, and I linked it to your website now. I hope that's OK! :-)
I'm getting it done with ChaLEAN Extreme mixed with some Insanity and some other fun Beachbody cardio or such, like Brazil Buttlift or Slim in Six. I'm sore today, and am dreading the workout for that reason today. LOL But i WILL do it after I get done here. So cool that Tina won $1K in WOWY. Lucjy duck. I'm still the only one of us who has NOT won something. Grrrrrr, maybe I'm on a do-not-let-her-win list? :p
Hope you are enjoying the kids free week! We do need to touch base, so call me when you ahve a minute. My schedule tends to be more flexible.

You will win next week... just wait and see :) and I'm the week after that :) I need another $1000 in my pocket.

WOWY'ing when ever I can... it's right now 11:15 and I'm headed to bed... the earliest I have gone to bed in ages... last night it was 3 am... was up finishing my taxes, got them submitted tonight... lesson learned... keep up on the business expenses weekly... don't wait till the end of the year... makes it so much harder to do...

OK.. nite all will try and make it back here tomorrow...

WOWY groups... there used to be a FitClubNetwork WOWY group... or something like that...

Coach Summit this past weekend was a blast... I think I'm finally recovering and getting my body back to normal... my sleep patterns are totally out of whack these days...

Monica, thanks for taking me to the airport... I really appreciate the ride... much better than the Super Shuttle... :)

I have been enjoying a steady workout partner... we have been doing Insanity in the park, at my house, at the gym, where ever we can meet with my portable dvd player (that I by the way won in the Daily WOWY Sweepstakes ;) ) it's been fun to have someone to work out with, some one who will push me harder.

Our last workout we tried out the new preview I got of Turbo Fire with my latest Tony Horton One on One dvd :) can I just say I love it.

I need to get back here and start posting again... I'm finally able to get up and have been running just a little... but I'm seriously thinking of doing the San Antonio 1/2 Marathon again this year...

It's a bit late to start training, but I think I can do it... Mixing P90X with my running it will get me there in no time :)
