I thought that the P90X recovery drink did everything that whey protein did? If that's the case, then why does Beachbody sell both and why do multiple people online still recommend that you use the both of them during your 90 days with P90X?
Hey there. I posted the following in response to you other post. Beachbody sells both because they do different things. You can read a little more below, but they really are different supplements designed to address different needs.
"They are different beasts indeed. The recovery formula is a 4:1 (carbsrotein) drink with creatine and amino acids. It has a lot of sugars in it, which your body can metabolize after you workout and it can use to repair. Don't use it late at night, because all the sugar causes an insulin response and don't use it unless you've really killed a workout. It isn't something you should use in the middle of the day as a meal replacement. Here's a short video about it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=phH2AHuo5zg.
Protein powder should be a part of your daily nutrition. Your body needs it throughout the day to support muscle growth."
Does that make sense?

MSgherzi,
I am always tight on money..I was lucky enough to find a steal on 15lbs of whey protein for about $70 (rare to find, but it was also because of a mistake for bodybuilding.com) but since I don't have the Beach Body recovery drink, I was drinking a glass of chocolate milk + 1 scoop of whey protein. I have heard this is somewhat a "poor mans" post workout drink since the chocolate provides the simple carbs your body can absorb.
I was also using Scivation XTEND (though its about to run out) for my recovery drink during my workout and post. Its expensive and not something I can keep up, hence turning to chocolate milk + whey.

Wow, 15 lbs of whey for $70 is a steal! As for being tight on money, I know how you feel. That's why I avoid branded products like the recovery drinks. They are just a mixture of cheaper ingredients in a fancy package slapped with a high pricetag. Mixing your own ingredients is cheaper and can be customized to exactly what you need. If you need your carbs and sugar just mix the whey powder (http://www.enutriments.com/protein/whey) with milk, fruits and oats. It's simple, relatively cheap, and healthy. Personally I use bananas a lot because they are good value.

I tried making my own recovery drink to save money for a while but it was just too much trouble for me in the end. I'm willing to pay for the convenience of a powder both when it comes to a sports drink (I like SUCCEED) and the recovery drink (I like the P90X one the best). In principle there's no reason you can't figure out how much, say, banana you should put into how much milk with how much whey protein to get a 4:1 ratio of carbs to protein. My husband and I just got sick of the exact measuring and the blender being constantly dirty. Especially if you also need it for Shakeology - I'm not buying a second blender! But if you're willing to put in the work you can certainly make your own recovery drink.
