Hey guys - I've got a poll over on my blog regarding coffee. It's supplementing a study of caffeine and it's affect on insulin and glucose metabolism. Thanks for voting!

Just one and boy do I love it. I used to be a cup at home, cup at work guy in the mornings and then guzzle down something like an XL latte around 3 pm when my body was gasping for energy. Got that down to one about 3 years ago and I feel so much better. Now when I lag at 3 pm I eat some trail mix or a larabar and I'm all good. Great post there Sterling.

Thanks Dave. I do black coffee or an Americano at least once/day.

Sterling Hi I'm Shannon. We've not met on here. So hello! I love your posts. I am fascinated by nutrition, like a baby being breast-fed, just can't get enough info about nutrition. I'm also a coffee drinker. I used to drink way more sugar in the coffee, in fact it was all sugar barely any coffee. Over the past year or so, I have gotten rid of the sugar habit as well as the cream habit. I drink one to two mugs of coffee most mornings, along with an occasional afternoon latte (maybe 2 times a week). Do you think this is hindering my progress? Since I began drinking Shakeology I honestly don't need the caffeine anymore in the mornings, i just like the taste and smell of the coffee first thing in the am. Plus i don't drink anything but water and hot tea (plain) so I fear giving up coffee because I feel like i'd get bored very quickly. Thoughts?

Hey Shannon - You already look pretty fit and lean so I doubt it's hurting you. To clarify, you're having black coffee in the morning?? If so, it's certainly not hurting you. And I understand, I walk to my espresso machine like a robot every morning. Your lattes probably aren't killing you, but if you feel like you are hitting a plateau that might be something that you could cut out easily.

Thanks Sterling - Yes I drink black coffee every morning. On rare occasions I may add 2 tbsp of flavored creamers but that is no more than once or twice a week, and I only add it to one of the cups I drink not both. I don't know about hitting a plateau. I have been at the same weight for the past few months, and to be honest many people tell me I need to gain a few lbs. I am still trying to figure that. Here are my stats. 5'6" 124 lbs. (to me that does seem a bit too lean but idk...), body fat % hovers around 15% on the digital scale (sometimes as high as 17% but sometimes as low as 14.5%). This scale also underestimates my % i have found. When i was seeing a nutritionist a year and a half ago, she would measure my body fat % with calipers and her measurement would come to 2 percentage points higher than my scale would on the same day. so i think that my actual body fat % is probably closer to b/n 17%. I am currently doing a hybrid program of the X and Insanity. Two years ago, I had my BMR tested (way before P90X or Insanity ever crossed my mind) and it was 1526. This measurement was taken in Sept 2008, my weight then was 133 lbs and my BMI was 21.5. What do you think I should aim to eat daily?

For maintenance, I'd aim for 1700 calories considering you are working out hard and consistently. If your weight changes significantly, adjust your calories up or down to your satisfaction and goals.

problem is....I'm not sure what my goals are anymore. perhaps a visit to my nutritionist is in order for a recalculation of BMR and update of my body composition.

I drink 1 cup in the morning and i mix it with 2% or whole milk depending what is available at work. I also use raw sugar for sweetener. that's my cheat and i'll never give it up. i'll just workout around it.

You and my wife agree. Coffee with sugar in the raw and a touch of heavy cream.
