Hey Folks,
Below is an interesting link for Kefir. If anyone is asking, "What the hell is Kefir?," it's basically milk that is fermented. I've used this in the past when I was lifting hard and I agree that it does wonders for the digestive system and post workout nutrition. Take a look-

I love kefir! Although I usually had it for breakfast :) Thanks for the link!

I also love Kefir. I mix the plain up with fresh cranberries in a food processor and eat it like yogurt. However, I am not currently using it while on my P90x program. I use Biotest Surge which is a recovery drink specifically formulated to repair muscle and help it recover.
Kefir is excellent as it is full of probiotics. It is the perfect thing to take if you have had to take antibiotics --basically because the antibiotics kill all bacteria in your body; good and bad. This leaves your body defenseless to fight off another illness. The good bacteria is critical to wellness. You can rebuild that with probiotics such as kefir, cultured vegetables and probiotics in capsule forms to name a few. It was mentioned that it is good for the digestive system and I truly believe that the key to your overall health is in your gut.
If you don't like plain yogurt you probably won't like kefir as the taste is quite similar. If you do like it I would suggest buying the plain kefir and adding your own fruit if you so desire. If you like sauerkraut and pickled vegetables you will probably like cultured vegetables. There are some great youtube videos on how to make your own. I've done it before and it is a relatively simple and primitive process. It is a super way to increase the benefits of the vegetables you are already eating.

This Kefir stuff sounds great. I loved the 6oz apple juice & half scoop of whey for my recovery drink for the first 5-6 weeks of P90X. However, I have recently decided to "Go Primal" and am trying to follow the Primal Blueprint as closely as possible. Using TheDailyPlate showed me that the recovery drink throws off my macros that I am trying to achieve. I still take the recovery drink on really strenuous days - like Legs & Back where I burn close to 900 calories, or maybe Plyo - but I am now trying to post workout fast, with a big protein shake about 40-50 minutes after I finish. It's working pretty well, and I have not noticed a decrease in energy or recovery. In fact, I have lost a good bit of fat in the week alone.
Just a thought... Hope everybody has a great week!

How long should you weight after you workout for the kefir, recovery drink or shakeology...they all confuse me? Should you not eat before you work out?

Don't worry too much about it. You can just experiment your way to finding something that works for you. Getting it "wrong" will not derail anything :) All you are risking is that you could have done slightly better, but nothing beats knowing what works (and doesn't) for you.
If you're hungry before a workout, you should probably eat something because, well, you're hungry and you're about to use energy your body is telling you you are low on. Although some people get pukey real fast if they eat right before a workout. Gotta try to know :)
After a workout, you have an hour window where the body is waiting for something to appear in your stomach to replenish glycogen and repair muscle with. A carb to protein ratio of 4:1 (so four times as much carbohydrate as protein) has been shown to make it the easiest for the body to absorb both. That's what the recovery drink provides. Neither kefir or Shakeology is not trying to give you that ratio. They are good for nutrition, and they will certainly provide something for the body immediately post-workout, but they are not explicitly intended for "feeding" your body that 4:1 ratio or carbs to protein that's optimal right after a workout over an hour. Not that your body will collapse on you if it doesn't get the optimal 4:1 ratio. Optimal - not required for survival :D You don't even need to worry about it at all if your workout is less than an hour.
If you're hungry after a workout, have something to eat in addition to drinking something for recovery. If you have a good relationship with your body, hunger means time to eat, plain and simple. It's how you know your body needs more nutrition :D

Thanks! I'm pretty excited about it - I'm going to get to learn all kinds of new stuff and the co-workers sound great! How's P90X treating you so far?

I know this thread is old but after reading this thread, I am still having a hard time making my own decision on what is the best protein shake (http://www.enutriments.com/protein/shakes). Of course everybody has their own opinion on what's best and what works better but at the end of the day, does it come down to only a matter personal opinion??
