View Full Version : Supplements and Timing
I 've got a question concearing supplements. What i use
Whey Protein
Pump Fuel
Recovery drink
Casin Protein
I work out when i get home form work about 5:30pm. I'm using the P90X nutrition and workouts. When is the bet time to take supplements to acheive best results. From what i've read I've got derived
1. drink a whey protein shake with fruit in the morning
2. pump fule before working out
3. recovery drink immediatly after woking out
4. casin before bed
I'm a bit confulled on the timing of these supplements the P90X programs seem to assume everyone works out in the morning.

I work out both in the am and at night. My nutrition is basically the same regardless of when I work out. The only major difference for me is when I work out at night I typically do not drink the recovery drink unless I have worked out well past my maximum energy and effort level. The Recovery drink is designed with a 4:1 carb to protein ratio which your body can utilize effectively within a 30 to 60 minute post workout window, especially if you are working out at full throttle. If you wait past this time frame or drink it when you have not worked out full throttle you risk your body converting the carbs to sugar and then to fats which get stored as fat in the body. If your main goal is to lose weight and burn fat, then be careful when you drink the Recovery Drink and be careful with amount of carbs you eat during the day. Your plan looks very similar to the way that my daily regimen is. I typically drink Shakeology in the morning for breakfast. I eat every three to four hours (smaller meals throughout the day) and I try to eat foods that fuel my workouts in the hours leading up to a P90X or Insanity workout. Immediately afterwards I drink RD if I have given it all when working out. Then immediately before bed if hungry, I will drink whey/casein mixed with almond milk. I do not think that you can go wrong if you follow the P90X nutrition guide. It is very well designed to be used in conjunction with the workouts. Some people may have differing opinions but this has worked for me so I am sharing.

If your goal is fat loss, I'd scrap the recovery drink after your workouts; you don't need it. However, if you want to keep it then drink it only after your workout. I'd recommend a whole food meal of mostly protein with some fat and carbs post-workout.
Try to stay away from shakes and derive most of your nutrition from whole foods. If the purpose of your casin before bed is satiety, eat something like chicken, cottage cheese, and/or eggs.

Sounds like a plan. It seems to work for Shannon. Why don't you try it and see how you feel? That's ultimately the best way to know.

sorry for intruding on your post, but I have a question about supplements for women. I'm asking the women members what supplements you use because I would like to get something for my wife to use when she starts working out. thanks in advance

Personally, all I use is Shakeology for breakfast with a prenatal multivitamin (has the extra folic acid and Omega-3), then the Recovery drink after my tough workouts. I used to take a ton of different vitamins and minerals, but it was negatively affecting my thyroid, so I had to stop. I'm still not sure if the Shakeology is affecting my thyroid (I need to limit my kelp/algae intake), but I was told to take it for a few months then come back for tests. Hope that helps you.

Since purchasing Shakeology it has radically changed my insides. I was never big on supplements before this but now I really feel that I have all that my body needs with the Shakeology. Occasionally, like Stacey I drink the Recovery Drink after a hard workout and before longer Insanity workouts I may take a preworkout supplement or drink black coffee but generally I am pretty free of all these things.

I'm not convinced there are big differences in nutritional needs between men and women other than during pregnancy. Admittedly I'm sceptical like that, but I think women's and men's multivitamins is something someone started marketing to make it seem more urgent to spend money on vitamins. Like Stacey and Shannon I drink Shakeology and also go out of my way to eat different proteins and vegetables and fruits and grains. I figure that pretty much covers it.
