Just a quick warning for folks who, like me, suffer from reflux: be careful with almond milk.

For the last two weeks I have been battling acid reflux (I suffer from GERD, probably inherited from my dad). I already knew I had reflux, but it hadn't been much of a problem until just before I started P90X about 3 weeks ago. Wouldn't you know the moment I decided to really go after true fitness my body would revolt!

As part of my new, healthier diet I tried almond milk for the first time, and thought I had discovered my lifelong alternative to cow's milk. Almond milk is delicious! Unfortunately, within four bites of Grape Nuts with almond milk, my throat tried to close up and it felt like I was having a heart attack. I wasn't. Apparently, I am allergic to something in the stuff, maybe the carrageenan: I'm not sure.

Suffice it to say, even being a guy who doesn't see the doctor very often, I paid her a visit and got a prescription for one of those strong anti-acids they make these days. It has worked somewhat, but I am still suffering when I eat certain foods -- some of them very odd indeed, such as spinach and sweet peas. I plan to go again next week and request some x-rays of my gallbladder, since some folks suffer this type of thing when that obscure little bile organ develops stones (I'm praying that isn't the case, but if so at least I'll know what's going on).

In the meantime, I'm still bringing it. I just watch what I eat and eat very small portions all day long with an eye towards getting plenty of nutrient rich calories to fuel the fat burning machine that is my body.

My advice for others who suffer from acid reflux is eat small portions and experiment with your diet so you can slowly figure out what insults your stomach and what goes down easy. Just make sure you don't eat a LOT of a new food too fast. Take a few bites, see what happens, and progress from there.

Why don't you journal everything you eat for one week on fitday and post it on the board? I'll take a look and try to help. If you eat a lot of processed foods, that could be the culprit. Grains might also be adversely affecting you or perhaps wheat or wheat gluten products.
