Why Become a Beachbody Coach?
I get asked these questions pretty frequently by people who knew me when I spent every day in an office practicing law. The answers are pretty simple, but the motivations are a bit more complex.
First and foremost, I coach because I absolutely love it. Right now it’s 5:25 a.m. and I pretty much popped out of bed this morning because this is a job that I WANT to do, not one that I HAVE to do.
Second, I felt compelled to action. This country is in a real crisis. The obesity epidemic in the U.S. is alarming. Check this out:
- “Obesity is defined as a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or greater. BMI is calculated from a person’s weight and height and provides a reasonable indicator of body fatness and weight categories that may lead to health problems.”
- “In 1980, 50 percent of the U.S. population was overweight; today it’s nearly 70 percent; by 2020 the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) reckons it will be a good 75 percent. By 2030, according to Johns Hopkins University, it could be 86 percent.”
I would assert that this rises to the level of a national security issue. In short, we are eating ourselves to death in the U.S. Perhaps more shocking is this:
- “(C)hildhood obesity has more than tripled in the past 30 years. The prevalence of obesity among children aged 6 to 11 years increased from 6.5% in 1980 to 19.6% in 2008. The prevalence of obesity among adolescents aged 12 to 19 years increased from 5.0% to 18.1%.”
The only thing worse than seeing my generation slowly kill themselves is watching them transfer these behaviors, and their associated belief systems, to their children. I simply cannot stand idle and let this happen. I believe I can change the world and my work as a Coach gives me the opportunity to do that person by person and family by family.
Finally, Beachbody provides me with liberty. To me, the word “liberty” means the ability to do the things I want to do when I want to do them. My family now has the financial means to essentially do whatever we want to do and the time flexibility to do it whenever we want. My business is entirely mobile.
In September, I took my Grandparents to Switzerland and was able to perform all my normal tasks via the internet. Last week, I shut things down for a week and went on a retreat without my cell phone and with 68 truly amazing people (a big shout out to the kids of Team 503!). After being tied to a desk for 10 years, I think this is pretty cool.
These are the three reasons why I chose to transition careers. So, why do I do it for free?
When we started this business, I told my partner, Monica, that I would get involved if—and only if—it was all about helping people. The second we started cutting corners or lost our outward focus on helping people, I would be out. You see, I believe that givers ultimately gain. People who give their time, money, or knowledge unconditionally (i.e., without any expectation of a return) see numerous benefits that people who place conditions on their gifts don’t. This is a bit of an esoteric concept, but essentially it means what goes around comes around.
When you start out with values like that, going to a free model is pretty much mandatory. Requiring BOD memberships or Shakeology would exclude some people—and I wasn’t okay with that. Our time and knowledge is 100% free. I’ve been truly blessed over the past couple of years and I believe that is in large part to our attitude and the approach we have with respect to helping people.
My life won’t be measured by the amount of money I make—it will be measured by the number of people that I help and the results they achieve. I’m building a team of people who share this value and mission. I believe that together we can make a serious dent in the obesity trend in the U.S. and personally help thousands of families recover their health, pride and sense of self-worth. Together, we are going to change this country…and, someday we’ll have an opportunity to change the world.
