Don’t Let Fear Control You

Fear is a powerful—and important—emotion. It can keep you alive, but it can also kill your potential. We all have to tell ourselves loud and clear—don’t let fear control you!

It’s okay to be afraid when the circumstances warrant it. The problem comes when fear is applied and the circumstances don’t warrant it. This isn’t isolated to fear; it can happen with other emotions as well. Like trust. One person violates your trust and you begin to distrust everyone, even the trustworthy. This is a downward spiral that allows your past to control your future.

Today, I took my fear into the water with me. It got pretty big and a little scary while I was surfing on Tuesday evening, but it wasn’t that way today.  Still, the fear remained. I couldn’t shake it. In surf that wasn’t too far outside the norm of what we see here, I was scared and that didn’t serve me.

The important thing for me today was just to notice the emotion and experience it completely. I was afraid. It was irrational. Now I can move on.

      Fear can be valuable. It can save your life. It can also show you where you are missing opportunities to show up bigger in your life. The key is to notice when it is happening and then learn something from it.
