Why New Years Resolutions Don’t Work
A lot of us make New Year’s resolutions. But, far fewer actually stick with them. I’m actually against them. Yes, that’s right. Let’s talk about why New Years resolutions don’t work.
At the core is that a resolution is really just a decision. A firm decision to be sure, but still just a decision. What is required to have a fighting chance at reaching a goal is a COMMITMENT.
What is Commitment?
Commitment is the bridge between decisions and actions. Commitment is what keeps you on the path when circumstances change. It’s great to make a decision today, but whether you will stick with it in a few weeks depends on your level of commitment. In short, commitment is what’s required if you want to change.
Commitment brings about visible results. Making a commitment differentiates you from those people who want changes, but little to nothing to make them happen. Commitment is the driving force of the successful.
Are You Committed or Just Interested?
Are you one of those people who make New Years resolutions and just wait for miracles to happen OR are you one of those who decide to take things into their own hands and commit to making the resolutions actually happen? I hope you’re the latter, because I’m going to tell you how important it is to stay committed to what you strive for.
What makes this story even more special is that it is personal.
When I was younger, I used to play basketball – only basketball. It was my sole form of exercise and it worked really well. But, when I was 24, I tore my ACL. This was a breaking point in my life.
Everything changed. I stopped exercising and gained quite a lot of weight. As you can imagine, I wasn’t really happy about that. Monica had also gained weight after having our second child and all we did was sit on the couch, watch television, and eat ice cream…until one day she decided to order the Power90 program after watching an infomercial.
We did it and got great results. After that, we ordered a couple of other programs and got excellent results. We lost ALL of the extra pounds between us and I was thrilled!
Several years later, I started working for one of the largest law firms in the world. This meant working at a desk and sitting in a chair all day long. I wasn’t exercising. I wasn’t happy about this. In fact, I was devastated and miserable—and I gained all my weight back and then some.
This is when I made my New Years resolution. I can recall the very moment I did it. It was December and I was sitting in a bar with one of my friends, drinking beer and eating pizza, chicken wings, and other junky stuff. I told him that I was going to start taking care of my health and fitness again. He didn’t trust me and started laughing. But, I did it.
For me, this time, it was more than just a resolution. It was a decision AND a commitment to my health. I knew I had to exercise and I knew how to do it, but I’d never learned how to eat well. I’d never learned the difference between proteins, carbohydrates and fats, and how those three affected my body. I committed myself to learning about each of these types of food and what happens to your body when you mix them—whether they work as fuel or are they converted into fats.
So, what is the crux of this story? This isn’t difficult. It may seem confusing, but it really isn’t! I figured it out, I changed interest into commitment, and got educated. I want to help YOU figure it out!
