What is Tempeh?

What is Tempeh?

Tempeh is a vegetarian soy protein that can be eaten occasionally instead of meat. Whereas tofu is curdled soy milk that is typically sold in smooth white wet blocks, tempeh is fermented soy beans and is brownish in color and sold in lumpy sliced rectangles. Tempeh is higher in calories than tofu [almost double], but it is preferable since it is less processed and contains more protein [about 50% more] and fiber [about 6x as much]. Whereas tofu is soft, tempeh is chewy and can be sliced and eaten like meat or crumbled and added to salads, soups, sauces, casseroles, etc. The biggest difference for me was that tofu doesn’t have much flavor and basically takes on the flavor of whatever sauce you put on it, but tempeh has an earthier and sweeter taste that takes a little getting used to. Like tofu, you’ll find it in the refrigerated section of your grocery store. You used to have to go to a health food store, but these days you’ll even find it at the mainstream stores [at least in California!].

A few important things regarding ALL soy products, including tempeh. You want to make sure it’s organic and non-GMO. Recommendations for how much soy to eat are all over the place as there are questions about it’s impact on hormones. To be safe, I try not to eat it more than a couple times a week.
