The Best At Home Gym Equipment
If you’ve followed us for a while, you know that Beachbody On Demand is all about making it easy to get fit and healthy at home. Equipment makes getting fit even easier, so we wanted to share our recommendations for the best at home gym equipment.
While going to the gym is great, it’s not always possible or even desirable for everyone, especially these days with COVID-19 running rampant. (Even before Covid, we preferred working out at home!)
Getting in shape does not require a pricey gym membership. And, it doesn’t necessarily require tons of equipment either, but some at home equipment is a definite plus. Equipment can liven up your workout, add variety, and make your home workouts better!
If you’re serious about taking your workout to the next level at home, there’s a lot of great at home gym equipment to choose from these days.
If you’re setting up your own home gym, it’s okay to take your time. You don’t need everything all at once and, of course, you don’t want to bust your budget.
Here is some helpful info on our favorite at-home gym equipment that’s great for beginners to seasoned exercisers, so you’ll know what to get when you’re ready:
The Best At Home Gym Equipment
1. Exercise Mat
This is definitely starting with the basics, but it’s great to have if you’re working out on the living room floor. An exercise mat is especially helpful for protecting your back during sit-ups and is a must for yoga and stretching.
2. Free-Weight Dumbbells
Free-weight dumbbells are a great addition to any home gym. You’ll use them for rows and presses, as well as curls and other upper-body moves.
You can also use dumbbells for adding resistance to squats, lunges, and deadlifts. Start with as low as 5 pound weights and move up as needed. Make sure you’re using proper form before moving up in weight.
A great starter set is one with 5-, 10-, and 15-pound dumbbells.
3. Resistance Bands and Loops
Use them for both upper- and lower-body workouts, including curl variations, flies, and pushdowns. Loops also offer variety for your stretching routines. And, they great for warm-ups and rehab routines as well.
You can work almost any muscle group with resistance bands, increasing your options when you anchor them to a door or wrap them around a post.
4. Chin-Up Bar
Regular chin-ups and pull-ups are the perfect exercise for toning your back and arms. An at-home chin-up bar is easy to install and use in a doorway.
Chin-ups and pull-ups take a lot of practice, patience, and sweat equity, but you’ll be glad you added them into your routine!
5. Jump Rope
Jumping rope is so easy and fun, even kids can do it! It’s also a deceptive exercise. Jumping rope takes coordination and stamina and it’s a great cardio workout.
If you’re aiming for cardio fitness, a jump rope is an excellent way to get your heart rate up fast. You’ll be amazed at what this humble piece of equipment can do for you.
An exercise and weights bench is a versatile and handy piece of at-home gym equipment. Use it with your dumbbells for bench presses and for split-squats and step-ups.
7. Stability Ball
Looking for a killer ab workout at home? A stability ball is the perfect solution. It also doubles for a core-strengthening alternative to your regular desk chair.
8. Strength Slides & Booties
Looking for another fun way to work your abs and core? Look no further than a set of strength slides.
You can get these discs for both carpet or hardwood floors. They offer a variety of options for low-impact exercise movements while giving you an intense workout.
These handy discs increase intensity without impacting your joints. They also strengthen your inner and outer thighs, legs, and butt.
9. Wrist and Ankle Weights
10. BOSU Balance Trainer
Improve your balance and stability while strengthening your core with a BOSU balance trainer. With both a flat and rounded sides, it gives you lots of options for different exercises, including polymetric and strength training.
11. Foam Roller
A foam roller is just what the doctor ordered after a tough workout. The roller helps keep you loose and flexible while soothing sore muscles. They’re especially great for helping stretch out hamstrings, calves, and quads.
