Shaun T LIVE in San Diego

This was the second year in a row that we’ve had the awesome privilege of Shaun T LIVE in San Diego for a fitness camp. Last year we were participants – this year we partnered with Scott Lord to put on the camp. It was a truly incredible experience.

Here’s the recap of my experience (if you don’t want to read the entire post, be sure you read the last part so you get a sense of who Shaun T really is and why he’s so awesome.)

The Grillin’ Before the Killin’

Scott decided to take Shaun to a place in San Diego called The Strip Club. (Easy people…it’s a steak place where you grill your own meat, chicken, or fish.) It’s super fun and everyone gets to talk a lot, while you are cooking. Shaun T is really amazing. He was friendly to everyone that came up and recognized him. He took pictures and even signed a few things. It was great spending time with him and getting to know him better.

Shaun T LIVE (No More Mr. Nice Guy)

Well, I knew it was coming, but when Shaun T rolled in it was ON. We greeted him with some LMFAO and a lot of excitement. Here’s the grand entry:

He got a big kick out of that welcome, but he doesn’t play around at these things and it wasn’t long at all before we got to WORK.

Shaun T Live Workout #1: Power Cardio

I don’t know what else to call this workout. The closest Insanity workout I could compare it to would be Max Cardio Conditioning. It was unbelievable.

After about 55 minutes of this heart pounding cardio, we did some ab work. Oh, goodie! Although it was extremely hard, there is something about working out with Shaun T live that makes you push so freaking hard. I felt like my heart was going to pop out of my chest, but there was no way I was going to quit.

Here are the numbers from the first workout:

  • 991 calories burned (stopped the watch about 5 mins  after the workout ended)
  • Average heart rate: 150
  • Maximum heart rate: 186

I felt unbelievable after this workout. It’s hard to describe the feeling when your heart rate gets up this high and you keep going and survive.

Shaun T Live Workout #2: Asylum and Teams

The first workout was stuff that I’m familiar with from Insanity. I love it. But, I haven’t done a lot of The Asylum workouts. I’ve done all of them at one point or another, but not the whole series. It’s a lot more upper body work than I normally want to do. I love the cardio, so Insanity is my go to workout. Pure Cardio and Fast and Furious are the quickest way to get your heart pumping. Asylum is a different ball game and that’s where we started the afternoon.

We then moved into the best part of the day—teams, baby! Shaun split us up into teams of four. I quickly grabbed Melissa Sackett and we formed our group. So fun! He’d have three people on the ground in low plank doing 2″ pulse ups, while the fourth person jumped over their legs – for 30 seconds and rotate. We raced across the room doing frog hops and sprinted back in a relay race. After my turn, my monitor said 188, and I thought I was going to throw up. I’ve never thrown up working out. I hear people say that all the time and I’ve seen it, but I’ve never even come close…until that moment. But, we won, so it was worth it.

Here are the numbers:

  • 829 calories burned
  • Average heart rate: 152
  • Maximum heart rate: 188

An incredible workout…but, so effing hard. The pushups busted me. Absolutely exposed my weakness. I was good on—and loved—the cardio. The pushups kicked my ass. My goal next year will be to do all of them.

I’m committing to doing 100 pushups per day in addition to whatever else I’ll be doing. On the days I don’t surf, I’ll be doing Asylum or Insanity. We live right next to the beach now and surfing is a great workout. I have a stand up board and the break here in Coronado is perfect for it. I usually go for 60 to 90 minutes and get a good upper body workout done in a peaceful place.

Shaun T Live Q&A

Shaun T sat around and answered questions for as long as there were questions. I recorded most of it and you can check that out here rather than me restating it:

Just when I turned off my video recorder something amazing happened, so I’ll have to try and capture it in words.

At the beginning of the day, Shaun asked us to set our intention/goal for the next year. Just something personal…it didn’t have to be fitness-related. At the end, my personal workout savior Melissa Sackett asked him what his goal was. In what has to be one of the most honest and vulnerable moments I’ve seen from another human being, he said that it was to simply be good with who he is every day. He admitted to being really hard on himself. He told us how getting to 4% body fat for the Asylum shoot was great, but returning to 8% has been hard on him, because the smallest little comments from people have such a profound effect on his self-image. Here’s a man who is in unbelievable condition [have you seen him???], is super successful, and so good at what he does. Yet he struggles with accepting himself as he is.

Knowing this, could you be a little nicer to YOU? Armed with that knowledge, could you put yourself in another person’s shoes and feel what they feel? If you do one thing tomorrow, take a look in the mirror and tell yourself that you are good with you. That doesn’t mean you get complacent. It just means you accept what yourself.

A truly amazing experience was had by all during the Shaun T live workout. I’m all fired up (can you tell?), so it’s an especially great time to get yourself some free coaching.
