Shakeology vs Muscle Milk and Myoplex

Every so often I get asked about Shakeology vs Muscle Milk and Myoplex protein shakes.

Before we get started, I want to share a few important disclaimers…

First of all, I want to clarify that I’m a long-time Beachbody coach so you might think I’m totally biased. A reasonable conclusion. But, honestly, I did MAJOR research and tried a bunch of products before and during my time as a coach. I don’t have tunnel vision and I’m definitely the kind of guy who would tell you to go elsewhere if I truly thought another product was better for. The bottom line—I won’t sell my soul for anyone.

Second, it’s important to understand that Shakeology is much more than a “protein shake,” which makes the comparison of Shakeology vs Muscle Milk and Myoplex a bit unfair. (If you’re interested, you can read more about what’s in Shakeology by clicking here.) Nonetheless, a lot of people want to know how it stacks up against these two commonly used protein shakes, so I put together this post.

Third, I’m not reviewing any complete line of supplements or options here. I’ve gone to the sites and pulled the nutrition facts for Muscle Milk and Myoplex and used the info as the basis for my review. I’ve also included some info with concerns from consumer organizations regarding these nutrition facts. You can make the ultimate decision.
Now, let’s get to some facts.

Shakeology Nutrition Labels

Here are the nutrition labels for each flavor of Shakeology straight from the Beachbody website:

Shakeology vs Muscle Milk

To simplify this comparison of Shakeology vs Muscle Milk and Myoplex, I’m only going to be comparing the regular chocolate Shakeology. Here is the nutrition label for Muscle Milk.

NOTE: In my comparison, I’m using the one scoop serving as that’s the most comparable to a serving of regular chocolate Shakeology from a caloric perspective.

  • Calories—150 calories per scoop. This is very close to Shakeology’s 160 calories.
  • Protein & Essential Amino Acids—16g of a combination of whey isolate and whey concentrate. This is inferior to Shakelogy’s 100% whey isolate, which is one reason for the lower price. (Be sure and click on that link to learn why whey isolate is better.)
  • Prebiotics & Digestive Enzymes—None. There are a BUNCH in Shakeology.
  • Antioxidants & Phytonutrients—No phytonutrients and fairly low amounts of Vitamins E, C and beta carotene. Shakeology contains about twice as much Vitamin E, 300% of your RDA for Vitamin C as compared to Muscle Milk’s 17%, and Shakeology has 1750 IU of beta carotene with none in Muscle Milk.
  • Other Vitamins & Minerals—Limited; contains 17% of your RDA of Vitamins A, B1, B6 and B12. Shakeology contains 100% of the RDA for Vitamin D and, for the most part, 35%-50% of the rest.
  • Superfoods—None. Shakeology contains a bunch in their proprietary superfood blend.
  • Artificial Ingredients—Yup. Shakeology has none. Shakeology uses cane sugar and stevia, which is far superior to the Sucralose in Muscle Milk.

UPDATE: Myoplex has been discontinued by EAS. (Not surprised.)

NOTE: The Myoplex serving size is 78g. This is larger than the 48g Shakeology serving size and basically double from a caloric perspective, so I used a double serving of regular chocolate Shakeology in this comparison.

  • Calories—300. A double serving of regular chocolate Shakeology contains 320 calories.
  • Protein & Essential Amino Acids—42g in their MyoPro® Protein Blend (contains whey protein concentrate, calcium caseinate, milk protein isolate, whey protein isolate, egg albumin, taurine and L-glutamine). A double serving of regular chocolate Shakeology contains 34g of pure whey isolate protein and more amino acids.
  • Prebiotics & Digestive Enzymes—None. There are a bunch in in Shakeology.
  • Antioxidants & Phytonutrients—There are no phytonutrients in Myoplex and 50% of your RDA of Vitamin A, 40% of Vitamin C, and 100% of Vitamin E. A double serving of regular chocolate Shakeology has 70% RDA for Vitamin A, 600% of Vitamin C, and 70% of Vitamin E.
  • Vitamins & Minerals—Generally comparable.
  • Superfoods—None. Shakeology contains a bunch in their proprietary superfood blend.
  • Artificial Ingredients—Yup. Shakeology has none. Shakeology uses cane sugar and stevia, which is far superior to the sucralose in Myoplex. Myoplex also contains carrageenan, a big no no.

Heavy Metals in Muscle Milk and Myoplex

One of the reasons I felt compelled to write this review was because of concerning reports about both of these supplements. In short, both Consumer Reports and CBS News found lead and heavy metals in both of them. You won’t find this listed on the nutrition labels of either supplement, which does bring into question whether their nutrition facts are even accurate.

Honestly, how could you trust any company who would allow lead into their supplements??? At the least, it indicates serious corner cutting. I don’t even want to think about the worst case scenario.

Read more about the heavy metal situation here.

Try Shakeology

Given the results of my comparison of Shakeology vs Muscle Milk and Myoplex, it’s pretty easy to see why there is such a dramatic price difference between the three products. The cliché applies here—you get what you pay for.

Want to give Shakeology a try? The Shakeology Sampler Pack is the best way to do so. Each sampler contains an assortment of Shakeology and a Welcome Guide. Here are the two different options:

NOTE: The Sampler Pack is only for first-time Shakeology users, so there is a limit of one per person.
