Does the 21 Day Fix Really Work?

Does the 21 Day Fix REALLY work? This is a question I hear a lot—asked in many different ways. It’s natural, and even a good idea, to feel skeptical about something new. But, there comes a point when skepticism can become just another excuse.

The best antidote for skepticism is facts. So, that’s what I’ll be presenting here.

The 21 Day Fix is backed by science. Pretty simple science, in fact. There is no “IF” if will work. It WILL work IF you fully commit to it and follow the plan to a ‘T.’

The Science Behind the 21 Day Fix

Let’s start with the woman behind the 21 Day Fix. Autumn Calabrese is not just a gorgeous marketing figurehead. Yes, she is a “celebrity trainer,” but she also has been certified by the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) and American Fitness Professionals & Associates (AFPA) AND has won national bikini competitions. Oh, and she’s also a best-selling author (her Fixate cookbook has sold more than 400,000 copies) and working mom who created Beachbody’s top-selling program for the past two years.

At the heart of the 21 Day Fix is lifestyle change—NOT dieting. The length of the program is not random—21 days is the amount of time said to successfully create a new habit.

The program combines an eating plan and a fitness workout. The eating plan is based on portion control, rather than calorie counting. What’s made it stand out from the other portion-controlled programs is it’s structure and simplicity.

When you purchase the full program, you receive a set of color-coded food containers to measure your portions. Here’s what’s included:

  • (1) 8 ounce green container for vegetables
  • (1) 8 ounce purple container for fruits
  • (1) 6 ounce red container for proteins
  • (1) 5.3 ounce yellow container for carbs
  • (1) 2.7 ounce blue container for healthy fats
  • (2) 2.7 ounce orange containers for seeds and dressings
  • (1) Shakeology cup

The number of containers you are allowed to each every day is based upon your caloric intake. You take your current weight and multiply it by 11, then add 400 (the calories burned during your daily workout). The resulting number is the amount of daily calories you need to maintain your weight. You deduct 750 to find out how much you need to eat to lose weight. (I really want you to understand that the secret to losing weight is to create a calorie deficit. You can real more about this HERE.)

The plan gives you a daily container allowance that is based on this latter calorie number. For example, my calculations put me in the 1,200 to 1,499 calorie range, so I’m allowed to eat the following every day:

  • (3) green containers (veggies)
  • (2) purple containers (fruits)
  • (4) red containers (proteins)
  • (2) yellow containers (carbs)
  • (1) blue container (fats)
  • (1) orange container (seeds/dressings)

In the Nutrition Guide, you will find a list of foods that you can eat in each container.

Now, remember that the calorie calculation included a 400 calorie deduction for your daily workout. There are seven 30 minute workouts included with the program (either on two DVDs when you buy the 21 Day Fix package or digitally through the Beachbody On Demand membership). That means in order to follow this program to the ‘T,’ you need to work out for 30 minutes every single day. If you don’t, you either need to adjust your calorie intake on that day or you will NOT get the results you’ve been told to expect.

Why Do the 21 Day Fix?

There are several reasons that I fell madly in love with the 21 Day Fix program:

  • The program’s structure totally removed the guesswork from my nutrition and helped keep me on track.
  • I no longer needed to spend time and effort counting calories or manually tracking my daily calorie deficit.
  • The healthy Nutrition Plan encourages me to eat whole single ingredient foods.
  • It made my weekly food planning and prep simpler because I do it buffet-style.
  • The Fix Nutrition Plan works with any of the Beachbody workouts so I can have more variety with my workouts.

If you already have an adequate supply of self-discipline, you probably don’t need the structure of a portion-control eating plan like the 21 Day Fix. But, for those of you like me, who thrive in a structured environment, it totally rocks.
