9 Ways to Coach Yourself to Success with Fitness & Nutrition

Here at the Fit Club Network, we help others live healthy and fulfilling lives. One thing that our years of experience have taught us is that ultimately only YOU can coach yourself to success.

While we are primarily focused on fitness and nutrition, the nine tips we share in this article work for coaching yourself to achieve ANY goal!

Obstacles to Success

Modern life is hectic, and unhealthy choices are abundant and convenient, making it more challenging than ever to live a healthy and fit lifestyle.

But, guess what? You absolutely CAN coach yourself to success in living a healthy lifestyle!

“I don’t have time” is one of the top excuses for not exercising. Another obstacle is feeling overwhelmed by starting something new. There is SO much information out there, especially with fitness and nutrition, that it’s become daunting!

If you can afford it, a personal trainer can lead you to success—but, that’s not affordable for most of us and it’s not sustainable for any of us.

Ultimately, living a healthy life is up to YOU.

THIS is the philosophy underlying Team Beachbody…

Tips for Coaching Yourself to Success

Tip #1—Be Your Own Leader

“But, I’m not a leader!,” you (and many others) say. We beg to differ!

If you’re in this mindset, we have two things we want you to absorb:

  • You do NOT have to be the kind of person who manages a big organization—or even a small group of people—to become your own leader.
  • To achieve your personal goals, being your own leader is absolutely necessary.

As we mentioned above, while there is always someone you can hire to pull you to your goal, you will have to lead yourself to stick with it over time. So, it makes sense to lead yourself from the very start!

If you have a strong desire to live a fit and healthy lifestyle, learning to coach yourself to success will save you huge amounts of money and will enable you to keep it up for the many years ahead of you!

To start, you’ll need to get clarity and start leading yourself little step by little step…

Tip #2—Find Your WHY & Clarify Your Goal

To coach yourself to success, you’ll need to sit down, get real, find your WHY, and clarify your goal.

WHY do you want to get healthier??

Go deeper than how you want to look at the big event or vacation you have coming up—why do you REALLY want to get healthier?

Do you have kids, grandkids, or plans for your life that require you to be healthy and—we’ll just say it—ALIVE?

When you focus on your deepest WHY, your ability to coach yourself to success will get exponentially stronger.

Tip #3—Break Your Goal Into Parts & Start Small

Breaking what feels like a ginormous goal into smaller parts is a must.

After you look at your why and set your goal, it’s best to shift your focus to making a single change.

Let’s look at nutrition first, since what you eat has the biggest impact on both your health and your weight.

A good first step when you start to coach yourself to success in living a healthier lifestyle is to choose a healthy eating plan that fits YOU.

Beachbody has two primary nutrition programs that form the foundation of the variations found in their individual fitness programs—Portion Fix and 2B Mindset.

While they share the common goal of making eating healthy simple and straightforward, these two eating plans take different approaches. You can learn more about them here:

The next part of the health equation is EXERCISE. We have some great news—it doesn’t take nearly as long as you might think!

The Department of Health and Human Services recommends between 2-1/2 and 5 hours of moderate exercise per week. That means it’s okay if you only exercise for 30 minutes a day!

Beachbody understands this, so they offer MANY program choices that stick to this reasonable time commitment. Here are just a few:

Tip #4—Put It in Black and White

Writing everything down—from your goals and overall plan to your meal plans and daily workout schedule. A log reminds you of where you started, how far you’ve come, and helps keeps you motivated.

The Beachbody app is one awesome way to track everything.

Schedule your workouts for the time of day that works best for YOU.

Working out first thing in the morning means unexpected interruptions later in the day won’t keep you from your exercise! But, for others, working out in the late afternoon pulls them out of an energy slump and makes them feel better.

Work out at whatever time works best for your schedule—but, remember to keep that time sacred. Put it in black and white on your calendar!

Remember, if you were coaching others, you’d put your tasks on the calendar and never fail to show up—do the same for yourself!

Tip #5—Get a Success or Accountability Partner

When you make the choice to coach yourself to success, it does NOT mean you go it alone!

Having a success or accountability partner has been shown to boost the odds of success in a massive way.

This is why Beachbody created their FREE coaching program. We’re serious—you get us as your very own accountability partner FREE when you sign up for a Beachbody on Demand subscription HERE!

As your partner, we’ll teach you how to be a better leader to yourself, give you LOTS of tool to make reaching your goal easier, and provide you with a lot of personal development opportunities.

Oh, and we have awesome and FREE online communities, like the Soulful Fit Club, The Insane Ward and Fit Club Network Coaches, that have the power to change your life!

Tip #6—Handle Your Emotions

Like any good coach or leader, you have to learn how to manage your emotions.

There will be many times you won’t “feel” like fixing that healthy meal or doing that workout. When this feeling hits, YOU must reconnect with your WHY and do it anyways.

You have to push yourself to learn new ways to replace the ways that weren’t working.

For example, we highly suggest you go to “Buffet Style Meal Prep School” to simplify healthy eating.

As you start reaping the benefits of healthy eating and consistent exercise, the endorphins and feelings of accomplishment start fueling your journey, so this gets easier and easier.

Tip #7—Recognize Your Progress

Good leaders give credit where credit is due.

As you coach yourself to success, don’t forget to recognize your progress and give yourself credit!

Good leaders don’t focus on the negative. They highlight the positive and help others refocus on their strengths.

Make it a regular practice to assess your strengths when it comes to eating healthy and exercising! Learn to focus on how far you’ve come instead of on how much you have left to do.

Get excited about how good you feel after eating a healthy meal or getting sweaty during a workout!!!

Tip #8—Don’t Beat Yourself Up

You wouldn’t beat up someone else you are coaching, would you? And, you wouldn’t like a personal trainer yelling at you if you messed up, would you?

If you’re going to coach yourself to success, you can’t fall into the bad habit of beating yourself up! This is a small, but important step.

We’re all human and we all mess up. You’re going to miss a healthy meal or a workout every once in a while. You’re going to have setbacks.

Good leaders and coaches focus on the positive, while holding you accountable. Listen to your body, have grace, and give yourself the benefit of the doubt.

It’s okay not to be perfect. Just remember that goofs are blips and learn how to quickly return to your new healthy daily habits. This, too, becomes easier and easier with time.

Tip #9—Commit to Daily Personal Development

Want to master some new skills that will help you coach yourself to success?

Of course you do! When you know better, you can do better!

Find 15 minutes every day—we’re pretty sure you can take it from all that time spent scrolling through your social media newsfeeds. Instead, read a personal development book or listen to a personal development podcast.

As your success partner, we’ll give you a lot of personal development resources!

Coach Yourself to a Healthy Lifestyle

You CAN coach yourself to a healthy lifestyle! It starts with honing in on your WHY.

We can help you learn to be your own leader and master each of these nine tips so you can coach yourself to success.

It won’t be long before your results will astonish you.

And, speaking from experience, your friends will see how great you’re doing and they’ll start asking you for advice! That’s exactly how the Fit Club Network got started.
